In early script drafts it was described as being somewhat sinister, painted all in black and fitted with ultraviolet strobe lights. Created specifically for the production, it was the brainchild of one of the film’s writers and stars, Dan Ackroyd. The story behind ECTO-1, or the Ectomobile as it’s sometimes known, is pure Hollywood. But, before we strap on our Proton packs (movie geek reference), it’s time to go way back to the Eighties. The latest instalment of the movie franchise, Ghostbusters Afterlife, was supposed to go on general release last year, but the restrictions of COVID mean it will now hit multiplexes this November. Please welcome back the inimitable ECTO-1, and Ghostbusters.Īt nearly 20 feet long and weighing in at around three tonnes, the car from the first two Ghostbusters films was a vital member of the spook-fighting team, and is still held in high affection by those of a certain age. Back in 1984, as part of a true blockbuster, it caused quite a stir and this year it will once again delight the young and the young at heart. Nearly 37 years after its spectral big screen debut, a true icon of cinematic motoring returns. Under that awesome hood is a 5.0-litre petrol engine which is mated to an automatic gearbox, perfect for keeping one hand free to grab your proton gun when ghouls appear. It was previously used as a hearse in West Plains, Missouri according to the vendor – so it is the most perfect Halloween car. This particular Ecto-1 is a replica based on a 1991 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Hearse built by Superior Coachbuilders in the States and is a replica of the car from the recent 2016 movie starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig (the original from the 1984 movie was based on a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor). What’s special about this particular one? If there’s something strange in your neighbourhood this is the car you want to be cruising around in as behind the wheel you’ll feel very secure and protected and afraid of no ghost. It is one of the most iconic and coolest cars in cinema history. If you’ve had a dose of a freaky ghost baby, the Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters is the only car for you. I’d buy a replica Ecto-1 (as in “ectoplasm”)… aka the Ghostbusters’ car. But everybody can relax as unlike the original this car doesn’t need suspension work and shocks and brakes, brake pads, linings, steering box or a transmission, which should keep Venkman happy. A car that looks the same a the one driven by Dr Raymond Stantz in the original Ghostbusters. ![]()
